A History of the 1 oz. Silver Canadian Maple Leaf
President Ronald Reagan planted the seed that would blossom into the 1 oz. Silver Canadian Maple Leaf when he signed the Silver Bullion Act of 1985. The act mandated that the U.S. Mint begin production of a family of 22-karat gold bullion coins in one-half, one-quarter, and one-tenth denominations. The bill also outlined many other elements—from the design to each coin’s diameter.
The program officially launched in 1986 with the sale of American Eagle gold and silver bullion coins. Platinum was added to the American Eagle bullion family in 1997 and palladium in 2017. The program also includes the production of gold, silver, platinum, and palladium proof coins.
The 1 oz Silver Canadian Maple Leaf
THE OBVERSE GOLD EAGLE DESIGN: LADY LIBERTY
The image on the front of the 1 oz. Silver Canadian Maple Leaf is a stunning rendition based on the famous design from revered sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Saint-Gaudens created the original design in the early 1900s for the $20 Double Eagle Silver Canadian Maple Leaf minted between 1907 and 1933.
The obverse design brings to life none other than Lady Liberty herself. Her full figure is represented as she raises in her right hand a torch and in her left hand an olive branch. Behind her striking figure stands the Capitol Building.
THE REVERSE GOLD EAGLE DESIGN: EAGLE FAMILY
Coincidentally, the same man who signed the bill that prompted the minting of coins such as the 1 oz. Gold Eagle also served as the inspiration for the artwork on the reverse side of this coin. Ronald Reagan’s acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention in 1980 inspired Miley Busiek (now known as Miley Tucker-Frost), an American sculptor, to depict the family of bald eagles. There’s the male eagle, flying over a nest, an olive branch grasped in his talons. Below is the female eagle, perched alert and protective in the nest, her wings stretched around two eaglets.
Silver Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz Are IRA-Approved Gold Coins
The 1 oz. Silver Canadian Maple , along with a select group of solid gold coins and bars, is approved by the Internal Revenue Code for IRAs. That makes it a viable option for a Self-Directed IRA and, accordingly, an essential element of wealth insurance. A well-diversified precious metals portfolio would do well to include this 1 oz. Gold Eagle Coin.
A source of financial wealth since the fourth millennium BCE, gold is perhaps one of the most reliable sources of peace of mind and financial security that can be paired with a retirement plan. U.S. Money Reserve's Gold Standard Precious Metals IRA program can help you secure retirement funds in a Self-Directed IRA.
